STOCKHOLM

Stockholm is the capital of Sweden. The city was founded by Birger Jarl as a precautionary measure to protect the country from the invasion of foreign navies from the sea and to put an end to the looting of the cities such as Sigtuna on Lake Mälaren. The name of the city refers to the islet Stadsholmen in central Stockholm. As a capital city, it is the site of its Government and Parliament and the residence of the Swedish head of state. Later in the 20th century, it became a modern, technologically advanced and ethnically diverse city. Municipalities are responsible for government-mandated duties and it is also the largest municipality of Sweden.
