Sodertalje City Map

Sodertalje is one of the important Swedish cities in Sodermanland . It is located in the east central part of the country. Before 600, AD, the lake Malaren was connected to the sea, but later on due to land elevation,
the lake was slowly amputated and boats had to be ported over land to and from the lake.

The name of this city has been originated from the word Telje and Soder (the later means south).

During the 18th century Sodertalje had a charter, but later on due to the Great Northern War and a series of plague epidemics, the population of the city came down to 200.

Presently, Sodertalje has one of the largest exile Assyrians communities of Europe.

Truck manufacturer Scania has been situated in Sodertalje. It is also one of the main centre for pharmaceutical company, AstraZeneca.

Apart from this the city houses Sodertalje SK, a prominent ice hockey team in the highest league - Elitserien. On the other hand, Assyriska is also a booming soccer club that has been put into operation by the city's Assyrian community, that presently plays in Superettan, the second highest national league. In basketball, Sodertalje BBK is one among the leading teams in the country, and became Swedish Champions in the 2004-2005 season.

The town is wonderfully located on a bay of Lake Malaren, that is been connected with the Baltic Sea by the Sodertalje Canal, 14 miles in length, with a minimum depth of 10 ft.

The Swedish city of Sodertalje has also been a birthplace of many prominent personalities. The Stockholm public transport system mainly gives service to this city.
