Gothenburg

Gothenburg is a Swedish city and municipality in the Vastergotland province on the west coast of Sweden. Founded in 1621 by King Gustavus Adolphus, it is the largest University City in Scandinavia. The establishment of the Swedish East India Company in 1731 helped the city to flourish. Its harbor developed into Sweden's main harbor for trades, especially foreign trades with highly profitable commercial expeditions to Asian countries. It became the main port of exist for Swedish emigrants. By 19th century, the city evolved into a modern industrial city. The Gothenburg is governed by the 81-member City Council.

Area & Location: Situated in Vastergotland province on the east coast of Sweden, the city of Gothenburg lies on the on the western coast by Kattegatt, an arm of the North Sea, at the outlet of the river Gota alv and the Gota Canal. Around 487,000 people reside in the city and its metropolitan area has 879,000 inhabitants making it the second largest city in Sweden.

Transportation: Two airports serve the city of Gothenburg. Its main airport is located at Landvetter and the smaller one, the Gothenburg City Airport lies in the northwest. Gothenburg harbor, the largest port in Scandinavia is the main center of trade in the city. Gothenburg tram is the largest light rail network in Northern Europe.

The Goteborg Botanical Garden, one of the most outstanding botanical gardens in Europe, attracts people with its gorgeous flowers and fantastic atmosphere. Liseberg, the largest amusement park in Scandinavia, attracts over three million visitors per year. The science discovery center Universeum is another point of attraction. One of Gothenburg's most popular tourist attractions is the archipelago 'Southern Gothenburg Archipelago'. Alvsborg Fortress, Vinga and Styrso islands are popular places to visit.
