Colombo Stock Exchange was established in 2005 in accordance with 1982 Companies Act no. 17. The CSE (Colombo Stock Exchange) functions under license from the Securities and Exchange Commission of Sri Lanka. The Stock Exchange of Colombo has 15 all time members, 1 specialized debt securities trading member, and 5 licensed members to trade in debt securities and equities. During 2007 the exchange achieved an annual turnover of Rs. 900 million, and had 1700 investors.
236 companies belonging to 20 different sectors are enlisted with the Colombo Stock Exchange. Their total market capitalization of Rs.824.3 billion amounted to approximately 30% of Sri Lankan Gross Domestic Product.
Colombo Stock Exchange Members
The member firms on behalf of investors trade in shares, debentures, and other securities listed in the exchange. Apart from capital market services, these members or stockbrokers provide market survey data and financial consultancy services to investors.
Presently 20 member operate under license from the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The Colombo Stock Exchange regulations are differentiated for i) Listing of company; ii) Members or stockbrokers; iii) Central Depository Systems; iv) Debt Security Exchange; and v) Alternative Trading Systems. Each of these is available in separate sets.
The market operations of Colombo Stock Exchange are segregated into Debt Market, and Equity Market operations. A Derivative Market operation will commence soon. The CSE operates from Business Development Division, World Trade Center, Echelon Square, Colombo 1.
