Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation is in operation since 1925. Initially known as Radio Ceylon, it was renamed Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation on 5th January, 1967 when it became a public corporation. Dudley Senanayake, the then Prime Minister of Ceylon officially opened this broadcasting corporation.
Vernon Corea is one of the founding members of this broadcasting corporation. With passage of time it has acquired greater popularity for its excellent radio services. It runs its operation under the supervision of Media of Sri Lanka Government and the Ministry of Information.
SLBC broadcasting channels
Presently, SLBC broadcasts 6 channels. They are Tamil National Service, Sinhala Swadeshiya Sevaya, City FM, English Service, Thendral and Velenda Sevaya. Among them, Tamil National Service, Sinhala

Swadeshiya Sevaya and English Service broadcast their programs in English, Tamil and Sinhala languages. On the other hand, the City FM is mainly popular among the young people.
'Sports Service'
Other than these channels, Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation also operates the 'Sports Service' channel for all the sport lovers. Added to this, several community and regional radio services are run by this Broadcasting Corporation of Sri Lanka.
Overseas Services Offered by the Broadcasting Corporation of Sri Lanka
Some overseas services are also operated by the SLBC. A significant percentage of South Indians listen to SLBC programs regularly. Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation is South Asia's one of the oldest radio stations.
