The Colombo Municipal Council has an administrative jurisdiction over a total area of 37.31 square kilometer that encompasses a population of 637,865 according to the census data of 2001.
The Mayor serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Colombo who is elected by the adult population of the city. The Municipal Council consists of 53 councilors who are directly elected through the process of adult franchise.
