Mayurapathy Chariot Festival- A Religious Festival
Reflecting the unique cultural heritage and traditional legacy of Sri Lanka, Mayurapathy Chariot Festival is one day religious affair. The Chariot is beautifully decorated with colorful flowers and silk cloths. The idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are placed on the Chariot.
The huge religious procession begins in early morning and continues through out the day. Several devotees participate in the sacred procession to seek divine blessings from the Supreme Being. The chariot moves amidst the chanting of Vedic hymns by the priests and

the musicians playing the traditional instruments of drums and bells.
The procession is accompanied with trained dancers who hold pots that are adorned with Margosa leaves and flowers. According to religious tradition, young unmarried girls who take part in the religious procession are blessed with a happy nuptial tie.
