average temperature remains about 22 degree Celsius in the winter season. This type of climatic condition makes Colombo one of the ideal destinations to spend a holiday.

The strategic position of Colombo contributed to its becoming one of the important sea ports of Sri Lanka. The city came under Dutch, Portuguese and British rules before it gained its independence in 1948. Formerly, Colombo was also known as Kalantotta. There are 6 administrative divisions of Colombo.

The northern parts and southern parts of the city of Colombo are hilly. To the south east and eastern parts of the city, marshy lands are located. The north eastern and northern boundaries of Colombo are demarcated by river Kelani. There are many canals that flow through the city. Beira Lake is an important water body of the city.
