Hindu Vel Festival, Colombo- A Religious and Cultural Affair
Hindu Vel Festival or the Aadi Vel Festival takes place every year in the sacred Arulmigu Sri Sivasubramaniya Swamy temple in the month of July. On the auspicious occasion, the temple is beautified with leaves of sugar cane, coconut and banana. To add to the beauty of the sacred shrine, the temple is further adorned with colorful flowers and silk linens.
A prominent Colombo event, Hindu Vel Festival usually starts with the Poorna Aguthi or the worship of the sacred fire along with the chanting of the Vedic hymns.

To mark the occasion, the idols of Lord Murugan, Sri Valli and Theivaanai are driven on a silver plated chariot from the temple of Pettah Kathiseran to Bambalapitiya shrine.
The beautifully decorated chariot is followed by musicians and devotees singing songs in praise of the Lord. The ardent followers break coconuts and burn incense sticks that add to the sacredness of the occasion.
