Colombo Geography


Colombo geography gives an overview of the topographical features and the climate of the capital city of Sri Lanka. The geographical location of Colombo is 6º 55' N latitude and 79º 52' E longitude. This capital city of Sri Lanka experiences tropical climate.

Colombo, located on the western coast of Sri Lanka, was formerly known as Kalantotta. The total area of this city is about 37.31 square km. It is one of the populous cities in Sri Lanka. A number of ethnic groups like Tamils, Sri Lankan Moors and Sinhalese inhabit this coastal city.

Colombo Climate

Climate of Colombo is of the tropical type. This type of climatic condition prevails almost throughout the year. During March to April, the average temperature of Colombo remains around 31 degree Celsius. In winter
the average temperature of Colombo is approximately 22 degree Celsius. Monsoon in Colombo is experienced from the months of October to January and from May to August. The average amount of rainfall received by Colombo every year is about 240 cm.

Colombo Topography

Colombo relief is varied and makes an interesting study. The southern and northern parts of the city of Colombo have hilly areas. Marshy lands are found in the south eastern and eastern parts of Colombo. The Beira Lake is an important water body located in Colombo city. The river Kelani flows along the north eastern and northern boundaries of this Sri Lankan city. At Modera this river drains itself into the sea. A number of canals are also found in the city of Colombo.
