Colombo Demography is a representation of a multi-cultural city in Sri Lanka. A number of ethnic groups reside in the city of Colombo. Some of these ethnic groups of Colombo include Tamils, Sri Lankan Moors and Sinhalese. Apart from them, Portuguese, Chinese, Malay, Dutch and small communities of people having Indian origin also stay here. Some of the European expatriates have also set up their homes in this city of Sri Lanka.
Ethnic Groups of Colombo
In this metropolitan city more than 2.3 million people reside. It is the commercial hub and most populated city of Sri Lanka. Sinhalese is the the main ethnic group of Sri Lanka. Their language is known as Sinhala. Most of them are Buddhists. Other than them, the ethnic groups of Burghers, Bharatha and Chetty can also be found in Colombo.
Sinhala is the official national language, while Tamil spoken by about 18% of the people is the other national language. In government activities English is commonly used, and is spoken by about 10% of the populace.

Religion of Colombo People
Majority of the people of Sri Lanka are Buddhists, comprising around 70% of the population. Muslims constitute around 11%, Hindus 9%, Roman Catholics around 8% and others 2%. According to that same report, about 1.58 million individuals are Buddhists, 238,000 are Muslims, 198,000 people are Hindus, 174,000 are Roman Catholics, and about 48,000 profess other religions.
Chetties in Colombo
Chetties is a small community residing in Colombo. In Pali, the term Chettey is translated as Setthi. During the Dutch and Portuguese periods this community migrated to Colombo from Benares and Coorg in India. They actively participated in church activities. They constructed a number of churches in Colombo district. They also have made significant contributions in the field of finance and trade. Chetties initiated plantations of teak trees in Sri Lanka.
