Origin of Valencia


The origin of Valencia can be traced back to 138 BC. The Romans built the city on the banks of River Turia.

To seek the origin of Valencia, one has to look back to the old European history, precisely the time around 138 B.C. At that time, the invincible Roman Empire ruled the Iberian Peninsula and after the end of second Punic War, they decided to spread their wings further. Soon, the Romans conquered the area beside the banks of Turia river and built a new city. The Romans named the newly formed city – Valentia, the earliest structure of today's Valencia.
The Progress of Early Valencia

Valencia in its early days bore the fruits of the advanced Roman technology and incomparable architectural styles. The Romans gifted Valencia with the first irrigation system in entire region. The canals and dams constructed by the Romans were later used and improved by the Moors. Even, in its earliest days, the city of Valencia rose to great heights. After the downfall of the Roman Empire, the city went through several bad phases but still Valencia's name spread far and wide for its rich culture and technological advancements.
