Valencia Geography


Visitors and tourists should be aware of Valencia geography, before undertaking a tour of the place. Valencia, situated in the eastern part of Spain, is made up of a narrow strip of land that lies in the north-south axis.

The total area of Valencia encompasses around 135 square kilometers. Towards the east of Valencia lies the Mediterranean Sea. Castellon lies in the northern region of Valencia and Alicante lies in the southern part. Valencia, which was granted autonomous status on the 1st of July 1982, is encompassed by Murcia on the south, New Castile on the west, Aragon on the north and Catalonia to the northeast.

Geography of Valencia

The Valencia topography is aptly described as the “White Coast”. There are miles and miles of sparkling white sands encompassed by tall peaks, orchards and verdant plains. The proximity of the sea endows the place with the pleasant moderate climate. The verdant plains of Valencia, is located in the coastal region, which lies towards the east.

The verdant plains gradually give way to the rugged terrain of the Iberian and Baetic mountains in the west. Heavy rainfall has eroded the mountainside. There are no grasslands in the mountainous regions, due to severe droughts. The southern region of Valencia comprises of the sloping hills of the Alicante. The Segura River, flows in the eastward direction through the Alicante.

Climate of Valencia

Valencia, experiences a Mediterranean climate, characterized by hot summers and mild winters. However, the hinterlands experience harsh wintry conditions. Rainfall occurs during the winter. The annual rainfall is around 400 to 500 mm. Castellon has about 430 mm of rainfall. Elche experiences scanty rainfall, which averages around 280 mm. The amount of rainfall decreases as one proceeds from north to south. Coastal dunes are located in Saler and Guardamar. The dunes had been planted with a large number of trees in order to prevent their erosion.

Valencia has diverse topographical features as exhibited by its verdant plains, mountainous terrains and sloping hillside.
