The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum is part of Madrid's ‘Golden Art Triangle’ the other two being the Prado and the Reina Sofia museums. One can reach the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum via the underground Branco de Espana. Bus numbers 1,2,5,9,10,14,15,20,27,34,37,45,51,52,53,74,146 and 150 can be availed to reach the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum. The nearest railway stations are Atocha and the Recoletos railway station.
Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum History
Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum dates back to the 1920s, when Baron Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza and his father Heinrich started collecting ancient artifacts that included 525 paintings. The collections did not have a permanent exhibition venue till 1932 until, Baron Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza bought the Villa Favorita in Lugano in Switzerland from Prussian Price Leopold. After his death all the artifacts were distributed among his relatives until his son Baron Hens Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza bought back the artifacts and housed it in the Vilahermosa palace in Madrid, Spain.
Presently, the collections in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum are owned jointly by Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza, the widow of Baron Hens Heinrich, and the Spanish Government.

Presently housing over 1000 artifacts, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum projects the importance that the Thyssen-Bornemisza family had for art. The collection in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum can be categorized into two parts, which are:
Thyssen-Bornemisza collection that was taken over by the Spanish Government from Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza in the year 1993. The collections in this category are open for public viewing since 1992.
The Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection is owned by Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza but it is under display in the museum since the year 2004..
The collections in Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum mostly include paintings by Van Eyck, Duccio, Carpaccio, Dürer, Caravaggio,Lucas Cranach, Rubens,, Van Gogh, Frans Hals, Gauguin, Kirchner, Mondrian, Klee, Hopper, Rauschenberg. Artifacts reflecting the traits of German Expressionism, Impressionism and post-impressionism prove to be the defining factors in the museum. North American works of art from the 19th and the 20th century also form an integral part of the collections in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum.

Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum: General Information
Tickets are available in the office of the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum from Tuesday to Sunday between 10 am to 6:30 pm.
During temporary exhibitions, special tickets are also available that are timed for a maximum of 15 minutes.
Ticket booking in advance are also available online. Special prices are offered for senior citizens (over 65 years) and students. Children under 12 years do not require any entry fee.
The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum is considered to be one of the most important Madrid museums that underlines the cultural heritage of the country.
