A biblical tradition, the celebration of Reyes Magos is one of the significant events of Madrid, Spain.
Originating from the tales of the New Testament, Reyes Magos is celebrated throughout Madrid with great pomp. The arrival of the three kings, Melchor, Balthasar and Gasper, on the occasion of the birth of Lord Jesus, is symbolized by the Reyes Magos. The kings, better known as the Magi brought gifts to infant Jesus.

The celebration is marked by the Three Kings Parade, Cabalgate de los Reyes Magos, organized on the evening of January 5. The celebrations continue till the morning of the next day. All the citizens of Madrid participate in the celebrations of Reyes Magos.

The streets are lit up with colorful lights and decorated with paintings and sculptures depicting the scenes from Nativity. People dress up as kings and ride on decorated carriages or horses. The kings shower goodies on the children standing nearby. Wonderful floats depicting various themes also accompany the parade.
Reyes Magos- the special features
At night, the children arrange treats for the kings and hay for their camels. The children also leave their shoes out in the open so that the Kings can tie wonderful gifts to those shoes. The next morning, the children find beautifully wrapped gifts awaiting them. The gifts brought by the kings on Rayes Magos feature as one of the major attractions for the children. The morning is also characterized by Roscon de Reyes, which is a ring shaped cake garnished with fruits resembling the bejeweled attires of the Three Kings.
