The Reina Sofía National Art Centre Museum is a part of the building of the Old General Hospital in Madrid.
One of the most famous contemporary art museums in the world, the Reina Sofía National Art Centre Museum was inaugurated by the king of Spain Juan Carlos and his wife Queen Sofia in the year 1992.
A substitute of the Spanish Museum of Contemporary Art, the Reina Sofía National Art Centre Museum houses some of the most exquisite paintings and art works of famous artists. It was designed on the plans of Francisco Sabatini who was directed to build it as a hospital.

The Reina Sofía National Art Centre Museum, after many restoration projects, was expanded especially when it was on its half way of demolition due to some dispute over urban planning. The restoration work was started by Antonio Fernández Alba and was completed under the supervision of Antonio Vázquez de Castro and José Luis Iñiguez de Ozoño. Finally in the year 1988, the Reina Sofía National Art Centre Museum was declared a National Museum in Spain with Timas Llorens as its first director.

Art Centre Museum have been displayed in two separate floors, the second and the fourth floor. The second floor comprise the collections of the vanguard artists from the 1900s to the year 1939. The more modern and contemporary works are housed in the fourth floor. Another reason behind the popularity of the museum is its housing one of the finest works of Pablo Picasso's-Guernica. Reina Sofía National Art Centre Museum: Visits
The Reina Sofía National Art Centre Museum is open on Monday and again from Wednesday to Saturday. It also remains open on Public holidays. On all the above days, it remains open from 10am to 2.30 pm.
The museum is closed on the 1st and the 6th of January, 1st of May, 9th of September, 9th of November, 24th , 25th and the 31st of December.
Entry fee per visit is Euro 6. It is free for senior citizens ( over 65 years of age) and children under 18. It is to be made sure that the visitors carry their identity proof.
