The travelers across the world are captivated by the Puerta de Alcala
Location and history of Puerta de Alcala
Located in the Plaza de la Independence, Puerta de Alcala or the Alcala Gate is one of the most famous landmarks in Madrid. This gate was built way back in 1599 in order to welcome the wife of King Felipe III, Dona Margarita de Austria. However, in 1764, under the instructions of King Carlos III, the Puerta de Alcala was demolished and a new gate was constructed to depict the grandeur of the city and served as a gateway to Madrid from the road to Aragon or Camino de Aragon. It also served the purpose of complementing the prestige of the present King.

About the design and construction of Puerta de Alcala
In 1769 the re-construction of Puerta de Alcala in Madrid was completed and it was established as a major landmark. The famous Italian architect Francisco Sabatini constructed the Puerta de Alcala. It took nine long years for the complete construction of this gate, which has three large archways and two smaller ones. A lion’s head adorns each of the archways and it was designed by Robert Michel. Statues by Francisco Gutierrez are placed on top of the gateway. The Puerta de Alcala is considered as a neo-classical granite gateway and is one of the most famous architectural splendors of Madrid. It is just adjacent to the historical Retiro Park or the famous Parque Del Buen Retiro.
