Flamenco

The traditional art form of Spain, Flamenco, is a spectacular combination of lively music and dancers dressed in colorful costumes. It originated in the southern regions of Spain and is influenced by different cultures.

Flamenco is the folk dance and music of Spain that had originated in Andalusia around 16th century. It draws its roots from countries like India, Egypt and Morocco and is therefore heavily influenced by various cultures from across the world.

The Various Aspects of Flamenco

A fascinating art form, Flamenco has three aspects-- Cante, which is the song, Baile, which is the dance, and Guitarra which is the Spanish guitar. There is a separate group of singers and a group of dancers. The group of singers consists of men who sing and play Spanish guitar.

The group of dancers is mainly made up of women who wear colorful and extravagant costumes and dance along with the music. They make rapid movements and it is interesting to note how the sound of their shoes merges with the rhythm of the music.

The rhythm of Flamenco is complex, the dance postures graceful and the footwork very refined. Flamenco combines spontaneity with passion and improvisations.

Different Styles

The dance form of Flamenco has two main styles.
One is 'jondo' which refers to the serious style that has a deeper meaning. It is the voice of the oppressed people. The other, 'chico', is the lighter style representing joy and humor. Another style is the 'duende', which includes communication at a deeper emotional level between the singers, dancers and the audience.

Presently, the traditional Flamenco includes touches of more modern music forms like jazz, rock and hip-hop. The music mixture is electrifying and finds a place in the dance clubs and bars of Madrid.

Flamenco Bars

Though Madrid today is a modern metropolis, it still preserves this traditional folk art that was born in the country so many years back. There are many dance clubs and Flamenco bars in Madrid that host Flamenco performances, live Flamenco music and shows. The Flamenco performers wear extravagant costumes and make swift feet movements that harmonize with the Flamenco music.

One of the oldest venues in Madrid for Flamenco is Casa Patas. Other well-known places where people can find Flamenco include Vina Pe, La Torre del Oro, El Mago, El Abuelo and Los Gabrieles.

Flamenco also features in cultural events and festivals where traditional music and dance plays an important role. A visit to Madrid means a must visit to one of the Flamenco bars to watch this spectacular folk art form of Spain.
