The Centro de Arte Reina Sofia is one of the chief art museums in the country. It houses some of the best art works including Pablo Picasso's masterpiece Guernica.
The Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid is also known by its official name of Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia. It houses an exquisite collection of 20th century art pieces. The building was originally designated to be a hospital and was designed by Francisco Sabatini, a notable architect. The exclusive collection of Spanish art was made a part of this Museum in 1990. The location of the Museum in close proximity to the Atocha station makes it accessible from all corners of the city.
Exhibits at the Centro de Arte Reina Sofia
The Museum is chiefly dedicated to the projection of Spanish art. Works of some of the master painters Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso are displayed in the museum. It houses Picasso's greatest works of all times, the Guernica. It also exhibits the work of other master painters like Pablo Gargallo, Joan Miro, Eduardo Chillida, Juan Gris, Jorge Oteiza and Antoni Tapies. Notable works of foreign artists have also been put on display which includes works of Soto and Barnet Newman.

The Museum underwent renovation work for a span of eight years from 1980-88. It was initiated by Antonio Fernandez Alba. The work was completed by Antonio Vazquez de Castro and Jose Luis Iniguez de Ozono. It acquired the status of a national museum in 1988. The permanent collection at the Centro de Arte Reina Sofia occupies a couple of floors of the museum. One of the floors is devoted to the works of masters of the early half of the 20th century. The other floor comprises of works which belong to the period after 1939 till contemporary times. The fourth floor of the museum includes works by:
