BARCELONA

Barcelona is the capital of the Spanish city of Catalonia. It is the second largest city sin Spain. The city is the seat of the Generalitat de Catalunya and its Conselleries, the Parliament of Catalonia and the Supreme Court of Catalonia. The French Empire of Napoleon annexed Barcelona and the province of Catalonia earlier and it was later returned to Spain after the downfall on Napoleon. The city was completely destroyed during the Catalonian Republic of 1640-1652 and also during the War of the Spanish Succession in 1714. The city developed with the industrial revolution in the 19th century and introduced many new industries. It is one of the earliest regions in continental Europe to begin industrialization. The city, which has a well-planned education system, is governed by a city council formed by 41 city councilors.



Area & Location: Located in the comarca of Barcelončs, along the Mediterranean coast between the mouths of the rivers Llobregat and Besōs, Barcelona is 160 km south of the Pyrenees mountain range. It spreads across the total land area of 100.4 sq. km. The city has 4.5 km of beaches. With 1,593,075 population, the city ranks second in the country in terms of population.
