Yongsan Garrison is located in the center of Seoul of South Korea. The garrison served as the headquarters for the US military base in South Korea. Yongsan Garrison also houses US -ROK Combined Forces Command, United Nations Command, Eighth United Stares Army and United States Forces Korea.
Yongsan Garrison is a US military base, which is located in Seoul's district Yongsan-gu. Yongsan Garrison houses the headquarters of United States Forces Korea or USFK. The Yongsan Garrison at Seoul is spread across over an area of 2.5 square kilometers.
History of Yongsan Garrison
Yongsan Garrison was originally constructed as a garrison for the Imperial Japanese Army. The garrison served the purpose from1910 to 1945. Yongsan Garrison used to be at the southern suburb of Seoul. After Japan surrendered in the year 1945, the US forces made their headquarters at the garrison and continued to render support to South Korea. In 1950, Yongsan Garrion had faced major damage by the attack of North Korea.
There are two major parts of the garrison, which are

South Post and North Post or Main Post. The two posts are divided by a four-lane thoroughfare that links two districts of Seoul. There are many notable buildings in the garrison like the UN command building and the Eighth army head quarters building, which were built by the Japanese army and are being used by the US forces.
Yongsan Garrison in the present days
There is a four star hotel, a range for golf driving at the garrison. There are many buildings spread across the floor space of 4.7 million square feet. Expansion of Yongsan Garrison started in October, 1971. Many schools were built, more family units moved in and facilities for the troops were also improved. The expansion of the garrison has transformed it into a modern installation.
Yongsan Garrison Relocation
U.S. Government and the government of South Korea have decided that the garrison would be moved to Camp Humphreys, which is close to the city Pyeongtaek. Some of the facilities that are present at Yongsan Garrison are gyms, swimming pools, bowling center, movie theater and soccer and baseball fields.
