History of Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency
The history of formation of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency goes back to 1945 when Korea gained freedom from Japan. The Kyunki-Do Police Department administered by US military was the first official police organization in Seoul which was established on 15th August, 1945. Two months later, on 21st October, 1945, the National Police of Seoul was formed. The original establishment of the Metropolitan Police in Seoul took place in the year 1946 on 17th of September. However, on 30th December, 1948 the organization was renamed as Metropolitan Police Bureau.
In the year 1951, National Assembly Police Security Guards was formed and in 1961 the Seoul Mobile Police Corps came into being. The Central Government Complex Police Security Guards was built in 1971 and the Airport Police Security Guards was established in the year 1973. The Olympic Security Guards of Seoul was formed on 28th October, 1985. Finally, on 1st of August, 1991, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency began operating in the city.
