Jongmyo Daeje Royal Shrine Rites, Seoul is an annual ceremony that takes place at Jongmyo Shrine in Jongno. It is celebrated on the first Sunday in the month of May. This royal ancestral rite is an important ceremony of Joseon Dynasty. This ceremony was registered as one of the World Cultural Heritages of UNESCO in 1995.
Jongmyo Daeje Royal Shrine Rites of Seoul was initially celebrated for five times in a year in the beginning of January, April, July, October and December. But this was terminated by the colonial government of Japan. From 1971 onwards, this is celebrated once in year. One of the major highlights of this rite is the classical Oriental music of Korea known

as Jongmyo Jeryeak. The ceremony starts off at 9:30 am with offering of greeting to the ancestral spirits and ends at 2:30 pm.
An important part of Seoul Jongmyo Daeje Royal Shrine Rites is the ‘parilmu dance’ that is performed by a group of 64 dancers. Another major event of it is the re-enactment of a royal procession known as ‘eogahaengnyeol’. This procession takes place for one hour from Gyeongbokgung Palace to Jongmyo Shrine.
One can reach Jongno by taking the subway lines 1, 3 and 5 to Jongno 3-ga Station. The shrine is only 5 minutes from the station.
