Johannesburg Zoo houses a variety of animals like gorillas, chimpanzees, elephants, lions, bat-eared foxes, polar bears and sable antelopes. It was established in 1904 and at present has more than 2000 animals.
Johannesburg Zoo is a Section 21 company of South Africa that was established in the year 1904. It is situated in central Parktown and covers an area of 54 hectares. Together with a large number of animals, the zoo at Johannesburg also features majestic trees and beautiful walkways.
Johannesburg Zoo houses many wild animals. There are about 365 species of animals found in this zoo. The total number of animals found in the zoo is 2,070, which include Chimpanzees, Bat-eared foxes, Gorillas, Elephants, Tigers, Sable antelope, Lions and Polar bears.
Town Council made the first 'official' enclosure of the zoo. During the early days, only leopards and lions were kept for public display. The zoo proliferated rapidly in the following years. As a result, paths were laid, bridges were constructed and beautiful trees were

planted. In the 'Twenties', stone houses were constructed to house elephants and rhinos. Houses for hippopotamus, camel, donkey, zebra, llama and other animals were established in the succeeding years.
