The city of Johannesburg has two main hospitals. These are the Johannesburg General Hospital and the Chris Hani Barangwanath Hospital. Johannesburg hospitals provide specialized service in various medical disciplines. The Johannesburg hospital is located in Parktown. It offers a wide range of services to the ailing and the sick.
Johannesburg General Hospital
The Johannesburg General Hospital has a total of 1800 beds. Among them 14 beds are reserved for Haematology and Oncology, 58 beds for the paediatric unit, 14 are reserved for short stay patients, and 40 for neonatal cases. There is also an Intensive Care Unit, consisting of 11 beds. This unit provides for paediatric and neonatal care. The hospital also has an outpatient department that provides services to about 60,000 patients. The hospital also has subspecialty clinics that attend to one third of the outdoor patients.
The Johannesburg General Hospital also has a trauma unit with an attending helicopter. The cardiothoracic department and the transplantation unit of the hospital cater to almost the entire of Johannesburg. The hospital also performs plastic surgery.
The Johannesburg General Hospital also provides hands on experience to the medical students from the University of Witwatersrand, faculty of health sciences. The students can work at the plastic surgery unit, the emergency and the trauma unit. This provides a great learning opportunity to the students.

Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital
The Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto is equipped with 4000 beds. It is one of the largest hospitals of the world. Almost half of the patients admitted to the hospital are tested to be HIV positive. A great majority of medical students from the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Witwatersrand do their internship at this hospital. The Emergency, Outpatient and Casualty wards are some of the busiest units of this hospital. The outpatients number over 5,00,000 per year. The admitted patients to the hospital number over 1,50,000 in a year. Most of the patients admitted to the hospital are either involved in motor accidents or gunshot injuries.
St John Eye Hospital
The St John Eye Hospital is located on the western border of the Baragwanath Hospital. It is equipped to treat all kinds of eye related problems. The hospital specializes in intra-ocular lens implantation. The hospital has seven operation theatres.
The Maternity Hospital at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital deals with all kinds of maternity cases. The hospital has a high percentage of caesarean deliveries. About 60,000 patients get admitted to the hospital each year. The hospital also treats referred cases at the Ante Natal Clinic.
