Johannesburg Administration

Johannesburg administration is looked after by the Metropolitan Municipality of the city. Johannesburg is one of the major cities in South Africa. The Metropolitan Municipal consists of two types of councilors, the direct and indirect councilors.

The City Management

The proposition of reforming the government was raised during 2006. After the general elections took place on 1st March, the task of shuffling the government began to create a more progressive and organized government which would look into the welfare of the natives of Johannesburg. Before the reformation the office of the City Manager was vested with all the power to govern the city and the Executive Mayor's duty was confined to the political boundary. However, during the shuffling of the government the duties of both these government officials were merged together to create an effective government.

The Division of Labor

After combining the powers of Mayor and the Manager the management formulates policies, programs and also evaluates them. The City Manager works directly under the Executive Mayor and heads the administrative department of the city. The management team has a number of factions helping it to carry out the functions. The functions carried out by the management are as follows:
  • Formulates and Implements Policies
  • Conducts research
  • Planning of development
  • Reporting and Managing Performance
  • Coordinating the various Municipal divisions
The present City Manager of Johannesburg is Mavela Dlamini.
