Providing a platform for student expression, the Varsity is the chief newspaper of the University of Cape Town.
Varsity in Cape Town is the main newspaper of the students of the University of Cape Town. The paper was published for the first time in 1942. Varsity is a bilingual publication. The publication of the Varsity was propelled by the fact that the two different sections of students namely the English and the Afrikaans, were involved in a tussle over their cultural differences. The Varsity played a crucial role as a student newspaper and was the perfect forum of expression for both the groups.
Varsity-A Student Enterprise
|
The first initiative to publish the newspaper was taken by the Student Representative Council (SRC). They attempted to unify Die Spantou, which was an Afrikaans publication, and the UCTattle, an English newspaper of the University of Cape Town, into one single publication, Varsity. This new publication was aimed to do away with the barrier existent between the two sections and give them a common platform of expression.
The Varsity became popular amongst the student community with time. It carved a niche for itself and was now not dependent on the Student Representative Council. At the time of the Apartheid era, the Varsity voiced its liberal stand on the issue. Though the Varsity was not a mainstream journalistic enterprise, it managed to retain its credibility.
