Cape Town University is deemed as one of the best places for pursuing higher education in South Africa. The Cape Town University has the reputation of being the earliest educational institutions of the country offering higher education. Over the years it has acquired the reputation of being one of the best in the field of research and academics.

Cape Town University-Beginnings

Initially the University of Cape Town was set up as a Boy's High School in 1829 and was called the South African College. The College was transformed into a university between the years 1880-1900, with the help of the adequate financial support that it received from different sources. The University then invested some of the funds for building science laboratories. Separate departments were formed for subjects like geology and mineralogy with a view to provide trained professionals for the gold mining and diamond industries.

The University of Cape Town took a leap forward with the setting up of the Medical School and the initiation of courses in engineering in the years 1902-18. The Cape Town University went on to scale greater heights in the coming years. It once again came into the limelight between the years 1960 to 1990 for reasons other than academics. Their resistance to apartheid policies made them famous during this time.

Cape Town University-Programs

The University of Cape Town boasts of several
specialized research units, about 60 of them. These units offer guidance for postgraduate studies. The University offers graduate, postgraduate and research programs on a wide variety of subjects under the faculties of Science, Humanities, Health Sciences, Engineering and Built Environment, Law and Commerce.

Cape Town University -Admission Procedure

Undergraduate students seeking admission to the Cape Town University need to clear their matriculation exams. The students should be proficient in the English language. The criteria for admission to the undergraduate courses for South African national and foreign students are different. Applicants to the Humanities stream need to clear an Alternative Admissions Test while those opting for Health Sciences need to sit for the Health Sciences Placement Test. The students at the University of Cape Town are also offered financial assistance. A part of the University fund is directed towards this end in order to help students with limited financial means to complete their education. It also offers scholarships to its students. Students in their very first year are eligible for entrance scholarships. During their subsequent years in the University, students are also eligible for scholarships from their respective departments. The University also offers sports scholarships.
