Location of Cape Town

Being the legislative capital of the South African Republic, Cape Town is the capital city of Western Cape Province. Initially, Cape Town was the state capital city of the undivided Cape Province before 1994. This port city is situated at the base of Table Mountain which is on the coastal area of Table Bay. Cape Town includes the region close to the north of Table Mountain and adjacent to Signal Hill. The latitude of Cape Town is 33º 57' S while the longitude is 18º 28' W. According to historical records, Cape Town is the
first colony by the Table Bay, which was established by Dutch chief sailor Jan van Riebeeck in 17th Century.

Orientation of Cape Town

The city of Cape Town is positioned amid the background of Table Mountain (3,570 ft high). The Southern Peninsula, on the eastern shore of Cape Town, has a vertical and steep mountain range. This mountain range extends from the Devil's Peak to the Boulders Beach. The seashore of Atlantic Ocean stretches along the western shore. The downtown area of Cape Town is situated on the north end of the Atlantic shoreline. The eastern region of the Crags of Cape Town is characterized by sloping land stretching up to the Cape Flats. The high mountains of the Stellenbosch region are visible from the Cape Flats area.
