Jazz Dance Theater Cape Town is one of the famous dance group of South Africa. It was founded in 1975 by Sonje Mayo. In 1990 the group won AA Vita Award. It became an independent group.

Jazz Dance Theater – A Unique Dance Troupe:
Jazz Dance Theater Cape Town is known for its innovative dancing style. It perfectly blends African and Western dance style. The members of this group belong to different race and class representing the all encompassing nature of Capitonian culture.
Jazz Dance Studio was established by Sonje Mayo. It came to be known as the Sue Parker Contemporary Dance Company when Sue Parker took charge of this group. The group received its new name Jazzart Contemporary Dance Company when Val Steyn came to direct this group. In 1986 the group was renamed as Jazz Dance Theater.

The Abamayani Project:
Alfred Hinkel became the director of this group in 1986. The Abamayani Project indicated the commitment of this dance group towards the enrichment of South African culture. The project gained success because of its live music, singing and various dancing style.
The Cultural Commitment of The Jazz Dance Theater:
Jazz Dance Theater was running short of fund. But the members did not forget their commitments. They continued to perform at different venues and also did not stop organizing workshops among disadvantaged communities. They maintained the artistic standard of their performances and workshops.
Jazz Dance Theater - AA Vita Award Winner:
Jazz Dance Theater became popular because of its unique teaching method. It won the AA Vita Award for the Best Contemporary Choreography for “Bolero” in 1990. It became the modern dance department of Cape Performing Arts Board in 1992. This helped the to get financial support.
In 1999 Jazz Dance Theater became an independent group.
