Cape Town city police supervises the maintenance of law and order in the city.
Founded on December 1, 2001 according to the South African Police Services Amendment Act (1998), the Cape Town city police are bestowed with the responsibility of implementing various rules and regulations in the city. Cape Town city police, a municipal policing service, looks after the general patrolling of the city.
Cape Town City Police- the objectives
The main objective of Cape Town City Police is to detect and prevent crimes, both serious as well as petty ones. The officers of the police service of Cape Town have the power to impose fines and make arrests. However, the investigation of cases falls under the Detective Service of the South African Police Service. The traffic rules are also executed by Cape Town City Police, working in association with the Provincial Traffic Service.

Civilian Oversight Committee- the governing body of Cape Town City Police
The proper functioning of Cape Town City Police is supervised by the Civilian Oversight Committee comprising an equal number, seven in this case, of Councilors of City and citizens. The main function of this committee is advisory. It also guides and evaluates the police service of Cape Town.
Every appointed official of Cape Town City Police is trained at the Municipal Police Training College, Philippi.
