Cape Town City Hall


Cape Town City Hall opened its door to public in 1905. The building that houses the City Hall reveals Italian architectural style. It was built in commemoration of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra.

Cape Town City Hall is one the major attractions of the city. Until 1905, Cape Town did not have a town hall. The design of the City Hall reflects Italian Renaissance style. Sandstone was used to build this hall. The Victorian building that houses the Cape Town City Hall is sure to leave you spellbound. Architecture of Cape Town City Hall:

Cape Town City Hall features marble staircase and mosaic floor. The glass windows enhance the architectural beauty of the hall. Norman Beard designed a special organ with 3,165 pipes for the City Hall of Cape Town. The clock at the City Hall seems to
be a replica of the Big Ben, though this one is smaller in size.

City Library and Philharmonic Orchestra:

Cape Town City Hall houses the City Library which is often visited by school children. The art book collection of this library is of much help to them. Beside that it also has a collection of history books. The Philharmonic Orchestra is situated in the city hall.

Historic Significance of Cape Town City Hall:

Cape Town City Hall has a great historical significance because Nelson Mandela gave a remarkable speech from the balcony of this City Hall immediately after being released from captivity.
