v The history of the Cape Peninsula University of Technology is highly interesting as it was established as two different institutions. The foundation of the first institution, The Cape Technical College, was laid in 1920. The Cape Technical College at that point of time occupied the premises of the Longmarket Street Building. It came after the incessant efforts of the people for imparting technical education. Almost after forty years of this the Peninsula Technical College was established in 1962. The classes were subsequently shifted in 1967 to Belville.

Both the institutions together underwent a change of status and came to be known as the College for Advanced Technical Education. After 1979 these two colleges officially came to be known as the Cape Town Technikon in Cape Town and the Peninsula Technikon in Belville. At the time of apartheid in Cape Town, when most of the educational institutions in the city had to cater to one particular group, the Cape Peninsula University of Technology allowed every section of the population to become a part of it.

Following the introduction of the Technikons Act in
1993, the University was now authorized to grant graduate, postgraduate and PhD in the field of Technology. Within a span of four years the University also began courses in business, science and engineering.
