Cape Malays- the history
Epitomizing an important phase in the history of the city, the Cape Malays constitute a major ethnic community of Cape Town, South Africa. The slaves and exiles brought from different parts of Asia, especially Indonesia, by the Dutch East India Company were the ancestors of the Cape Malays. After the colonization of the Cape region, the Dutch brought Malay speaking people to work as bonded slaves. The present Cape Malays are the descendants of these slaves.
Cape Malays- the lifestyle
The community of the Cape Malays is concentrated in the Bo-Kaap area of Cape Town. Tightly knit together by the principle of sharing, the group has as its basic unit, the family. The houses of the Cape Malays are painted in bright colors and are constructed in Georgian style. Quaint paths covered with cobblestones connect the houses of the area.

Islam was brought to Cape Town by the Cape Malays. The people still follow the same religious practices as before. The mosques located in Cape Town serve as their places of prayers. The Cape Malays have also contributed to the advent of the Afrikaans language. Interaction between the Malays and the Dutch languages led to the standardization of the Afrikaans used in daily life.

The food and music of the Cape Malays are significant parts of their culture. Folk music is also quite popular among the people of this community. Spicy delectable dishes like mutton curry, Koeksisters, bobotie, bredie, sosaties and desserts like coconut tarts feature on the menu of the Cape Malays.
Cape Malays- the festivities
The two occasions celebrated by the Cape Malays include the New Years Day and the Day of the abolition of slavery. People dressed in colorful clothes sing and dance on the streets during these celebrations. Parades and fireworks are also organized to add charm to the festivities. The Malay choirs are an added attraction during the New Year celebrations.
