Albert Nolan


Albert Nolan dedicated his life in the struggle for democracy, social justice and human rights. He was born in South Africa in 1934. He became a part of the Dominican Order in 1954. Some of his famous works include "Jesus Before Christianity", "God in South Africa" and so on. Albert Nolan, one of the famous personalities of Cape Town, was born in 1934 in this city of South Africa. He received his primary education in South Africa. He obtained his doctorate degree from Rome. Influenced by the works of Thomas Merton, he became part of the Dominican Order (a religious order) in 1954

Awards Won by Albert Nolan

Albert Nolan obtained an honorary doctorate in 1990 from Regis College, Toronto, Canada. Nolan devoted his life to the struggle for social justice, human rights and democracy. He received the Order of Luthuli award from South African Government in 2003.

Albert Nolan - A Multifaceted Character

Albert Nolan joined the Dominican training institute as a teacher in 1960s. He held the position of national chaplain of the National Catholic Federation of Students in the 1970s. He became the Master of the Order of Preachers in 1983. He had also been the Vicar General of the Dominicans in South Africa from 1976 to 1984 and again from 2000 till 2004.

Nolan did not leave South Africa during the period of political upheaval. He became associated with the Institute for Contextual Theology. He initiated the publication of a magazine called Challenge in the 1990s. He was also the editor of this newspaper.

Albert Nolan was not only a Roman Catholic Priest but also a famous author. Some of his works include "Jesus Before Christianity" (1976), "God in South Africa" (1988) and "Jesus Today: A Spirituality of Radical Freedom" (2006).
