Abba Eban- early years
Born on February 2, 1915, in Cape Town, Abba Eban was actually named Aubrey Solomon. Later he took the name of Eban from his step-father. A good student from the beginning, Abba Eban was educated at Cambridge University and excelled in oriental and classical languages.
Abba Eban- start of career
After the completion of his studies, Eban enrolled in the English Army in 1939. He later acquired the post of the UN liaison officer at the Jewish Agency for Palestine in 1946. He headed the Israeli delegation visiting United Nations in 1949. He continued to be the leader of the Israeli delegation even after he assumed the prestigious position of the ambassador to USA in the following year.

Abba Eban- as member of Knesset
An important phase in the life of Abba Eban began with his election to the Knesset, the Israeli legislature, in 1959. Belonging to the Mapal party, Eban was appointed as the Minister of Education and Culture in 1950. He served at different positions during his tenure as a member of the Knesset which included posts of Deputy Prime Minister (1963), Foreign Minister (1966) and the Chairman of a Parliament Commission set up to discuss foreign affairs and defense (1984). He placed his resignation from the Knesset in 1988.
