Singapore is the smallest country in Southeast Asia. Officially known as the Republic of Singapore, it is an island city-state. The name Singapore is derived from the Malay words singa meaning 'lion' and pura meaning 'city' which gave it the title 'the Lion City'. During its colonization by UK in 19th century, it was a Malay fishing village and was later occupied by the Japanese Empire during World War II. It was made a crown colony by Britain in 1867 and became a self-governing state in 1959. Later, on August 9,1965, it attained official sovereignty and the country began celebrating this date as its National Day. The city, which grew from a developing nation to a global city, presently has the highest standard of living in Asia. Ranked as the 22nd wealthiest country, it has a highly developed market-based economy, which made it a developed nation.



Area & Location: Lies on the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, Singapore is situated on the south of the Malaysian state of Johor and north of the Indonesian Riau Islands. Located just 137 km north of the Equator, it is situated at 1°17' Latitude North and 103°51' Longitude East. Covering a total area of 699 sq. km, it is the second most densely populated independent country in the world with a population of 4,326,000.
