Vissarion Belinsky


Vissarion Belinsky was a social thinker of Russia. He was more popular as an essayist and a literary critic who played an important role in the field of Russian revolutionary intelligentsia. Throughout his life Vissarion Belinsky worked hard to bring improvement in Russian literature. He was born in Finland on 30th May, 1811. Vissarion Belinsky's father was a medical officer.

Early Life of Vissarion Belinsky

In his childhood Vissarion Belinsky was admitted to the gymnasium in Penza. After completing his study from here, he took admission to the Moscow University in 1829. Later in the year 1832 he was forced to leave the University for writing a play named Dmitrii Kalinin. This play mainly dealt with the institution of serfdom. Through his bold writing he attacked slavery and serfdom.

After this Vissarion Belinsky started to work as a journalist. In many of the journals his critical articles were published. Some such journals were Otechestvennye Zapiski, Moskovskii Nabliutadel', Teleskop and Sovremennik. From 1838 to 1839, he engaged himself in editing the Moskovskii Nabliudatel.
In the year 1841 he wrote an essay, "The Idea of Art". His literary works were greatly influenced by the German philosopher Hegel. However, in the later part of his life he got more engrossed in the Utopian socialism.

The World Known Writer- Vissarion Belinsky

This great man had been an active member of the progressive writer's group. Through his writing he protested against sociological realism in the field of literature. From 1843 to 1846, he wrote 11 essays on the Russian poet, Pushkin. The Russian novelist Dostoevsky was also deeply moved by Vissarion Belinsky.

Vissarion Belinsky used literature as a powerful weapon to bring an improvement in the social structure. He played a remarkable role in the literary theory of Marxist-Leninist school. Some of his most-known works of literature include Osnovaniya Russkoi Grammatiki, Polnoe Sobranie Sochinenii, Pismo K Gogolju, Literaturnyye Metshtaniya, Literaturnoe Nasledstvo and Stati O Pushkine. This great man passed away in the year 1848 in Saint Petersburg.
