History of Trinity Cathedral

In 1733 a field tent was set up that operated as a temporary church. It carried on its clerical works only during the summer months. The field tent was managed by the Izmailovsky regiment. Empress Elizabeth ordered to build a church and during 1754 to 56 it was constructed in Saint Petersburg. Two alters were built for the church. One of the alters was named as Trinity. The flood of 1824 affected the church. Later Nicholas I ordered the restoration of the church.
From 1828, the restoration work for the church had started that ended by 1835. The height of the building is above 80 meter. Plaques in memory of the officers of the Izmailovsky regiment have been put up on the walls of the church. Other objects like trophies, keys and flags from the regiment have been preserved in the cathedral of Saint Petersburg. The visitors should not also miss to check out the collection of icons.

The Nativity icon and the icon of Jesus Christ are kept at Trinity Cathedral in Saint Petersburg. The Beginning of Life Trinity icon was gifted by Empress Elizabeth in 1742. A holy ark made of silver is also kept here. Nicholas I also gifted a cross to the church. Two Gospels are also preserved by the church. Some important valuables of Trinity Cathedral were robbed in 1922. Later in 1938 the Trinity Cathedral was closed down.

Later the cathedral was transformed to a store house for Soviet Ministry of Telecommunications. But the church was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church in 1990. To mark the victory of the Russian power in the Russo-Turkish War in 1877 to 88, an 8 meter high column was erected in the premises of the Trinity Cathedral.
