Tramways in Saint Petersburg are the important means of communication of the Russian city. Popularly referred to as the city of trams, Saint Petersburg had a total of 700 kilometer of tramways in the year of 1990, that provided conveyance facility to about 950 million travelers.
Saint Petersburg Tram- A Glorious Heritage
In 1862, communication in Saint Petersburg was possible by horse carriages which were commonly known as Konka. By the year of 1906, horse carriages were re-designed and re-structured with modern engine and coaches to suit the convenience of the passengers. Saint Petersburg city in 1906 had 150 kilometer of tracks for supporting the modernized coaches which provided easy conveyance to 106 million travelers, per year.
However, keeping in tune with the development of

modern technology, Saint Petersburg introduced trams that provided easy and comfortable transportation to different parts of the city. The well known engineer, Fiodor A. Pirotskiy had first constructed tram in the year of 1880. Trams, however, became a regular means of transportation of Saint Petersburg city from 16th September, 1907.
During 1917, Saint Petersburg had 710 trams that connected all parts of the city. The modern day trams have well trained conductors who keeps a vigilant eye on ticket less travelers. The conductors sell tram tickets to the passengers who do not have monthly pass. The Tram depots of Saint Petersburg city can easily be identified by the capital letter 'T' that is clearly written on the sign board.
The trams of Saint Petersburg connect all the major tourist and commercial spots of the city with much ease and comfort.
