The Winter Palace is located by the River Neva in Saint Petersburg, Russia. It is one of the major tourist attractions in Saint Petersburg. The imperial palace was built for Empress Elizabeth of Russia during 1754 to 62. The Hermitage Museum was set up in this palace in 1764.
The Winter Palace in Saint Petersburg was constructed to be the royal residence of Queen Elizabeth. Before the palace could be completed, the Queen passed away. After her death, Catherine the Great and her family members lived in the Winter Palace. Some parts of the building had to be remodeled as a devastating fire damaged the palace in 1837.
The Winter Palace is an elegant structure, built in the Baroque style of architecture. It has three floors and has about 1945 number of windows and 1786 number of doors. There are approximately 1057 rooms in the palace.
Four adjacent buildings along with The Winter Palace were transformed to the Hermitage Museum.In Russia it is the largest gallery to display art works. It is one of the mostly visited museums in Saint Petersburg.

The Hermitage Museum of Saint Petersburg was set up in 1764. It was founded to display the 255 paintings that were bought by Catherine the Great from Berlin. The museum has a wide variety of artifacts and art works from different parts of the world. About 2.7 million exhibits are kept in the Hermitage Museum. Visitors will get to see exhibits from the time of Egyptian civilization to modern days of 20th Century.
The Hermitage Museum has a rich collection of Impressionist works by French artists like Pissarro, Manet, Cezanne, Monet and Renoir. Works of Rubens and Rembrandts are also kept here. Among the collection of Hermitage Museum, mention should be made of works by Van Gogh, Rodin, Gaugin and Matisse. Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci, Titian and Michelangelo’s works are also showcased in the museum.
Tourists can visit The Winter Palace and the Hermitage Museum located at 32 to 38 Dvortsovaia Naberezhnaia in Saint Petersburg. The museum remains open from 10.30 am to 5.30 pm every day, except Monday. On Sunday it remains open only till 5 pm.
