The Stock Exchange and Rostral Columns together form an important part of the nineteenth century history of Saint Petersburg, Russia. These are located in the Strelka of the Vsilevsky Island. The place had been a prospective business area during the times of Peter the Great. work continued for five years from 1805 and 1810. The architecture of the building shows features of Roman and Greek architecture. This is a busy area yet a very serene place to visit with family and friends.
The Rostral Columns
The two Rostral Columns are situated on the either side of the Saint Petersburg Stock Exchange. They were the mark of the harbor and a landmark for the ships, close to the coast. The specialty of the columns is that they are adorned with the metal pulpits of ships. These were usually the ships of the opponents, which had been taken over by the people of Saint Petersburg. Thus the columns are a mark of their triumph.
