History of Saint Petersburg State Polytechnical University
The Saint Petersburg State Polytechnical University was established in the year 1899 and officially started holding regular classes since 2nd October, 1902. It received high honor bearing the name of the great emperor, Peter the Great. The institute was the brain child of great names like S. Vitte, N.P. Petrov, D.I. Mendeleyev and V.I. Kovalevsky.
Earl Andrey Gagarin was appointed as the first rector of this university. Although several times, the institute was assigned different names, the popular name attached to it is the Polytechnic Institute. In the 2002, the university was named as Saint Petersburg State Polytechnical University.
Facilities at Saint Petersburg State Polytechnical University Campus
The students of the university can avail various facilities at the campus. The campus of the university is spread over huge area and support facilities like library, sports center, canteens, clinic and hostel. Sports activities include boxing, swimming, weight lifting, basketball and athletics. Outdoor sports activities are held in two other recreational campuses like the southern camp on the black sea and the Northern camp located in Karelia where the students can enjoy yachting, underwater diving and mountaineering.
Fundamental Library of the university is one of the biggest libraries with scientific and technological collections. The total collection at the library is more than 2.9 million. At the reading room, Xerox and computer facility is available. The library can also be accessed over the Internet.

The university is located at 195251, Saint Petersburg, Polytechnicheskaya, 29. The central site lies between the Academitcheskaya, Ploschad' Muzhestva and Polytechnicheskaya, which are three important subway stations in the city. Another site is found in Lesnaya subway station. Polytechnicheskaya is the main subway to reach the university. Besides, buses with route no 69 and 75
can be availed to reach the location. Tram with routes no 40, 38, 61 and 55 travel to the university. One can also travel by the trolley buses with route no 13, 4, 34 and 21.
