The original St Sampson Cathedral in Saint Petersburg was built in 1709 in the memory of the triumph of Russia over Sweden on the 27th of June, 1709. This battle took place in Poltava. Peter the Great ordered for the construction of the St. Sampson Cathedral on June 27th which is also celebrated as Saint Sampsons's Day. In close proximity of the cathedral complex, there is a wooden church, designed by Domenico Trezzini.
Cemetery Around St Sampson Cathedral
The cathedral complex houses the cemetery of many an important Russian personalities. Among the prominent figures, Empress Elizabeth, Empress Anne, architects Rastrelli and Trezzini and many comrades known to Peter the Great are buried there.

St Sampson Cathedral- An Architectural Wonder
The construction of the stone cathedral of Saint Sampson started in 1728, the work of which continued for twelve long years. The cathedral has two sides named after Archangel Michael and John the Baptist.
The main altar of St Sampson was erected in 1740. The significant additions to the cathedral include for cupolas. This gave a Baroque style outlook to the St Sampson Cathedral. The paintings on the walls and ceilings in the interior of the Cathedral show angels, cherubs, flowers and gardens.
