St. Nicholas' Naval Cathedral in Saint Petersburg had been built in honor of the sailors who had passed away in the sea. The architecture of the building is known as the Baroque architecture and was designed by S. Tchevakinshiy. The cathedral was christened after Saint Nicholas Naval, who was popularly believed to be the guardian of all sailors and seamen.
St. Nicholas' Naval Cathedral- An Overview
The St. Nicholas' Naval Cathedral was built in 1762 by Bishop Veniamin and was honored with the status of a cathedral by empress Ekaterina. The construction work of the church began in the year, 1753. In course of time, more and more memorials were erected in the cathedral complex to pay tribute to Russian sailors and navy men who lost their lives for patriotic reason.

A memorial has been erected in honor of two sailors who were killed in the Russian-Japanese war of 1904-1905. Another addition was made in the recent past, when in 1989, forty two sailors were drowned after a submarine, Komsomolets met with a disaster.
St. Nicholas' Naval Cathedral- An Architectural Marvel
The Church is located on the banks of the Canal, Kryokov, to the south of the Teatralnaya Ploschad. The plot surrounding the cathedral has an abundant reserve of greenery. In side the cathedral, there are spectacular paintings and ceiling works. The paintings are those of some reputed icons of 18th century.
St. Nicholas’ Naval Cathedral represents the unique architecture and religious sentiments of the traditional times in Saint Petersburg.
