Peter and Paul Fortress was built on a river island of Neva. The foundation of the fortress on 27th May, 1703 also marks the establishment of Saint Petersburg city. The fort was built mainly for defense purposes by Peter the Great. It was also used to retain prisoners. The Peter and Paul Cathedral in the fortress is the burial ground of the emperors of Russia.
Peter and Paul Fortress had been set up on the island of Zayachhi Ostrov by Peter the Great. The fort was built mainly to resist the Swedish army. Initially it was a structure made up of earth and wood. From 1706, the stone buildings were constructed under Tresini.
The fortress was used to serve as garrison of the city and to imprison people.Personalities like Gorky, Dostoevsky, Alexander and
Trotsky had spent some

time of their lives at this fortress. Alexei, the son of Peter was also kept at this fortress.
Peter and Paul Fortress in Saint Petersburg house the graves of many rulers of Russia. Starting from Peter the Great to Alexander III, the emperors and their wives have been buried at the Peter and Paul Cathedral within the fortress area. The stone cathedral was built during 1712 to 33.
Peter and Paul Fortress houses some of the museums of Saint Petersburg. The mint, the Commandment’s House and the City History Museum are located within the premises of the fortress. The fortress itself is an attraction of Saint Petersburg. To visit the museum and the cathedral of Peter and Paul Fortress, an admission fee is required. On Tuesdays, the buildings set up in the fortress premises remain closed.
