Pafnuty Chebyshev or Pafnuty Lvovich Chebyshev was one of the Great Russian mathematicians who introduced theorems in the field of probability theory. He is known for the theory named Chebyshev's inequality. He founded many principles which are used in the study of computer science, mechanics and mathematics even in the present times. He is known by the different names of Chebyshov, Chebychev, Tschebyscheff and Tchebycheff.
Chebyshev's Childhood and Education
Pafnuty Chebyshev was born on 16th May, 1821 in the small town of Okatova, Russia. Pafnuty Chebyshev belonged to an upper class family. He was initially educated in his house by his mother and his cousin. At the age of 11, he went to Moscow with his family and settled there. P N Pogorelski, a famous mathematician taught him mathematics and inspired him greatly.
Pafnuty Chebyshev completed his high school and went to Moscow University to study Physics and Mathematics during the later half of 1830's. He graduated in the year of 1841. He obtained a masters

degree in 1843. He taught mathematics at the Saint Petersburg University as a professor all throughout his life.
Contributions of Pafnuty Chebyshev
Chebyshev was not only known for his inequality theory but also many other mathematical works. He greatly contributed by laying the foundation for the prime number theorem. He showed the way of using polynomials in the estimation of functions. This is used in the present times as a part of computer science teaching. He could explain the way how mechanical coupling helped to form rectilinear motion from rotary motion. The there different bars linked together helps in the approximation of rectilinear motion, according to the Chebyshev parallel motion.
Last years of Chebyshev
Chebyshev worked at the University of St. Petersburg till his retirement in 1882. He became a member of Swedish Academy of Sciences in the year 1893. On 8th December, 1894, Chebyshev breathe his last in Saint Petersburg, Russia.
