Nina Gagen-Torn was a popular Russian writer and poet. She wrote and published several poems and short stories. She indulged in detailed study and writings on history. She was an ethnographer as well. She provided scientific description about the different human societies. Her original name is Hagen Thorn.
Education and Career of Nina Gagen-Torn
Nina Gagen-Torn was born on 15th December, 1900 in St. Petersburg. She belonged to a noble family, called Dvor in Russia. Her father Ivan Eduardovich Gagen-Torn was a physician. She studied at the Petrograd Institute of Geography and graduated from there. She completed her post graduation in the year 1924 from the University of St. Petersburg. Her career started as a lecturer. She also worked at the Museum of Ethnography. She also served as a secretary of Soviet Ethnography magazine in 1934.
Nina Gagen-Torn and Political Repressions

During the several political oppressions in Russia, Nina Gagen-Torn spent few years at the labor camps in Kolyma. She was also exiled between 1942 and 1943. In the later years she made a thesis on Volga people's dress and obtained the Kandidat or post graduate degree in science. She was again subjugated to repression and exiled in Mardovia. She was later sent to Yenisey for permanent exile. When the Stalinism period ended, she was pardoned. She led a normal life since 1956.
Works of Nina Gagen-Torn
Nina Gagen- Torn's studied the book The Tale of Igor's Campaign extensively and made hypothesis based on the book. Her research works are mostly based on the human societies in Russia, folklore of Bulgaria and Russia and also Russian ethnography history. She died on 4th June, 1986. Two small books comprising her poems were published after her death.
