Neva River


Neva River is an important river in northwestern part of Russia that originates from Lake Ladoga at Shlisselburg. The total length of the river Neva is 74 km.

The major countries located along the basin of River Neva are Russia, Belarus and Finland. The river flows through the city of Saint Petersburg and the western part of Leningrad province. On the basis of average discharge, it is the third largest river in Europe after the Volga and the Danube. The average discharge of Neva River is 2,600 m³/s (91,832 ft³/s). The drainage basin of Neva River covers 282,000 square km that includes Lakes Ladoga, Ilmen and Onega and the Volkhov and Svir Rivers.

The length of river Neva within the periphery of Saint Petersburg is 28 km. The average width of the river Neva is 500 meter and the average depth is 9 meter.

Importance of River Neva

Neva was an important river during the ancient times. It was used as a link between the Volga portages and Baltics. It was Peter, who initiated the construction of the Ladoga Canal to link Neva with the Svir Rivers and the Volkhov. It was an essential part of St. Petersburg's beauty.

The Neva Delta
