Monument to Catherine the Great is a popular attraction in St. Petersburg Russia. This beautiful statue of Catherine the Great stands at a Ploschad Ostrovskovo, close to Nevsky Prospekt. The statue was first opened to the public in the year 1873. She worked with politicians, courtiers, military men and poets that are evident from the figures that surround the statue of the Empress.
Catherine the Great was greatly regarded by the people of St. Petersburg for her constant efforts in improving the living standards of the people. She was a great Empress who loved her people very much and worked for their benefits. Her rule in Russia is termed as the "golden age".

Designing the Monument to Catherine the Great
The planning and designing of the monument is credited to the famous artist from Russia named M.O. Mikeshin. Some of the best architects and sculptors of the times have contributed in the making of this historical monument. Catherine is seen in an official gown with a sword held in the right hand. In her left hand she holds an olive garland. The base of the statue has carved figures of royal dignitaries like Prince Potiomkin (politician), Alexander Suvorovone (general of Russia), Gavrila Derzhavin (noted poet) and Ekaterina Dashkova (Russian Academy of Sciences’ first lady chair).
